immergrüner oder laubabwerfender, verholzender Ranker bis 25 m (in Kübelkultur bis ca. 12 m) mit wechselständig angeordneten langgestielten, bis zu 40 cm langen Blättern mit lang auslaufender Spitze, bestehend aus 2 gegenständig angeordneten, bis zu 15 cm langen und bis zu 9 cm breiten, ovalen bis elliptisch-eiförmigen, glänzend tiefgrünen Blättchen und einem endständigen Blatt. Die wachsartigen, bis zu 8 cm langen, dunkel violettfarbenen bis schwarzen Blüten erscheinen mit bis zu 20 Einzelblüten an bis zu 30 cm langen Trauben am alten, oftmals laublosen Holz

Overwintering: Older specimens bright at around 0-5°C, and only sporadically to water in larger intervals and small quantities so much that the root ball not dries out completely.
