immergrüner, hoher Baum bis zu 20 m mit wechselständig angeordneten, bis zu 15 cm langen, ledrigen, ovalen, oberseits glänzend tiefgrünen, unterseits mit einem zart goldfarbenen Stich versehenen Blättern und kleinen, süßlich duftenden, weißlich-violetten Blüten, aus denen sich eßbare, eiförmige oder runde, bei Reife oder grünlich-braune Früchte mit sehr süßem Fruchtfleisch entwickeln. Der innere Kern des Samen ist eßbar und wird als Mandelersatz verwendet.
Verwendung: Nur vollreife Beeren sind eßbar und werden frisch aus der Frucht gelöffelt oder zu Desserts und Säften verarbeitet.
