immergrüner, vielverzweigter Strauch oder kleiner Baum bis zu 20 m mit dichter, runder oder zylindrischer Krone und wechselständig angeordneten, glänzenden, dicken, länglichen, spitz zulaufenden, am Rand gezähnten, tiefgrünen Blättern. Die kleinen, weiß oder gelblichen 5-petaligen Blüten mit herausragenden Staubfäden erscheinen in Gruppen in endständigen Rispen, gefolgt von eßbaren, orangeroten, bei Reife schwarzen Früchten mit leicht säuerlich-bitterem Geschmack
Verwendung: Der Baum wird in der Wildnis geerntet und vor Ort als Nahrungsmittel, Medizin und als Faser- und Holzquelle verwendet.
