laubabwerfender Baum bis zu 10 m (am Naturstandort bis zu 45 m) mit rundlicher Krone (im Jugendstadium kegelförmig), wechselständig angeordneten, ahornähnlichen, bis zu 20 cm langen, 3- bis 5-gelappten, tiefgrünen, am Rand fein gesägten Blättern, die bei Zerreiben einen süßlichen Duft verströmen und einer prächtigen, farbenfrohen Herbstbelaubung von rosa zu verschiedenen Rottönungen. Aus den kleinen grünlich-gelben Blüten (männliche in kurzen, aufrechten Ähren, weibliche in hängenden, kugeligen Blüten) entwickeln sich kugelige, bei Reife holzige, bedornte Kapseln
