laubabwerfender, je nach Standort immergrüner, zweihäusiger, buschiger, hoher bedornter Strauch bis zu 5 m oder kleiner Baum bis zu 15 m (am Naturstandort) mit wechselständig angeordneten, ledrigen, bis zu 12 cm langen, ovalen, elliptischen oder fast rundlichen, am Rand gezähnten Blättern mit pinkfarbenem oder rötlichem Neuaustrieb. Die kleinen grünlichen Blüten erscheinen oftmals in der laublosen Zeit oder mit dem Neuaustrieb, männliche in ca. 2 cm langen Trauben in den Blattachseln, weibliche Blüten erscheinen einzeln oder in kurzen Trauben. Aus den weiblichen Blüten entwickeln sich eßbare, kugelige, bei Reife fleischige, rötliche bis purpur-schwarze Früchte
