immergrüne, starkwüchsige, verholzende Kletterpflanze (Liane) bis zu 25 m mit großen unterirdischen Knollen, 4-kantigen Zweigen bis zu 4 cm ø und wechselständig angeordneten, elliptischen, tiefgrünen Blättern. Zweige und Blätter sind flaumig behaart. Die rosafarbenen Blüten erscheinen direkt am Stamm (Kauliflorie). Aus den Blüten entwickeln sich bis zu 11 cm lange und 4,5 cm ø rote Steinfrüchte, bedekct mit eßbarem Perikarp und einem stärkehaltigen Kern - große Samen -
