mehrjährige, gruppenbildende, aufrechte Pflanze bis ca. 2 m mit behaarten Sproßen und großen bis ca. 50 cm langen fiederspaltigen behaarten Blättern. Die leuchtend gelben, ca. 7,5 cm großen, strahlenförmigen Blüten erscheinen in den Blattachseln und am Ende der Triebe. Die Laub zeigt, je nach Lichteinwirkung  nach Norden oder Süden, die geöffneten Blüten nach Osten, deshalb der Name "Kompaßpflanze"
