laubabwerfender, ausladender Baum bis zu 25 m mit grau-brauner, in Längsstreifen abblätternder Rinde und wechselständig angeordneten, ca. 60 cm langen Blättern, bestehend aus unpaarig 7 bis 9-zähligen, breit lanzettlichen, tiefgrünen, am Rand fein gesägten Blättchen und gelber bis goldgelber Herbstfärbung. Die männlichen, grünlich-gelben Blüten (Kätzchen) sitzen in bis zu 20 cm langen langen herabhängenden Rispen am Ende der alten Triebe, die weiblichen, kleinen, ebenfalls grünlich-gelben Blüten erscheinen in endständigen Blütenähren mit bis zu 7 Einzelblüten am Ende der Neutriebe, gefolgt von großen, kugeligen Steinfrüchten mit dicker Schale, die je eine Nuss mit süsslichem Geschmack enthalten
