immergrüne, rhizombildende Staude bis ca. 1,5 m mit auffällig rot-braun gestreiften, bambusähnlichen Stengeln und wechselständig, spiralig angeordneten, lanzettlichen bis linealischen, tiefgrünen Blättern. Die basalen, kegelförmigen Blütenstände, bestehen aus strahlend roten Brakteen und leuchtend gelben Blüten
