Synonyme: Caesalpinia spinosa, Caesalpinia tinctoria, Poinciana spinosa, Tara spinosa, Caesalpinia tinctoria, Caesalpinia pectinata u.v.a.

immergrüner, dorniger Strauch oder kleiner Baum bis zu 5 m mit wechselständig angeordneten Blättern, die sich aus bis zu 8 paarigen, ca. 2,5 cm langen elliptischen, tiefgrünen Blättchen zusammensetzen. Die wachsartigen Blüten mit gelben Petalen und nur einem orange gezeichnetem Blütenblatt erscheinen in bis zu 20 cm hohen, aufrechten, dichten Rispen am Zweigende, gefolgt auf auffällig orange-rötlich gefärbten, ca. 12 cm langen Schoten
Verwendung: Aus den Samen lässt sich schwarzer Farbstoff herstellen, aus den Wurzeln lässt sich dunkelblauer Farbstoff gewinnen. Das Holz liefert natürlichen gelben Farbstoff.
