Protea plants such as Banksia, Dryandra, Grevillea, Hakea, Isopogon, Leucadendron, Leucospermum, Mimetes, Protea, Serruria and Telopea are from the family of the silver-tree plants (Proteaceae) and seem only in Australia and South Africa. In the indigenous areas they grow as evergreen, loosely branched bushes on poor, slightly acidic, often rocky soils. For the pot culture love is needed to these unusual plants, because the care requires some attention. To be able to cultivate Protea plants successfully about many years, some things should be considered: A substrate with pH factor from 4-6 is optimum, it must be very permeable and should be always mixed with coarse sand (no building sand), so that water can run off immediately. In summer they want a sunny, airy location and watered moderately only, but regularly with lime-free water (rainwater), and the substrate keep constantly slightly moist. In winter choose the location so brightly and aerial as possible and according to the temperature only so much water that the root bale dries up not completely. Should be avoided: - full sun and/or hot site - that the roots dry up - irregular watering - waterlogging - phosphatic fertilizer - high humidity If you take this to heart, you will have much pleasure with these plants! |
