mehrjährige, immergrüne, rhizombildende, Staude bis zu 6 m mit grünem, schwarz-violett gezeichnetem Pseudostamm und bis zu 5 m langen und 65 cm breiten, sattgrünen Blättern an bis zu 60 cm langen Blattstielen. Die Blüten sind umgeben von gelben oder auch lachsfarbenen Deckblättern mit gelblich-grünen Spitzen, denen bis zu 16 cm lange und 3,5 cm dicke Früchte folgen
