schnellwüchsiger, laubabwerfender, mehrjähriger, an der Basis verholzender Ranker bis zu 10 m (am Naturstandort bis zu 30 m) mit wechselständig angeordneten, langgestielten, 3-gelappten, bis zu 20 cm langen ovalen bis länglich-ovalen, zart behaarten, mittel- bis dunkelgrünen Blättern. Die großen, bis zu 30 cm hohen aufrechten, Blütenstände mit zahlreichen, intensiv nach Vanille duftenden, purpurvioletten Einzelblüten mit leuchtend gelbem Schlund erscheinen in den Blattachseln
