immergrüner Baum bis zu 20 m mit rötlich-brauner, anisähnlicher, duftender Rinde und wechselständig angeordneten, bis zu 12 cm langen und 6 cm breiten, elliptisch-ovalen, ledrigen, oberseits glänzend tiefgrünen Blättern mit auffällig gelber Nervatur. Die kleinen, grünlichen Blüten erscheinen in den Blattachseln, aus denen sich bei Reife schwarze Früchte entwickeln
