The Banksien are evergreen shrubs or trees, some species even "ground cover plants" and widespread with about 70 species in Australia. The leaves of many species are toothed on the edge, are dark green and underneath usually silvery grey colored. The flowers themselves are small and consist of more than 100 to 1000 flowers (in the case of the Banksia grandis up to 6000) together to a "inflorescence" and are a popular cut flowers in the floristry. The colors vary from yellow, orange, white, pink, or red. The fruits are woody "cones", which release the seeds only at high temperatures or a brush fire.
The sowing is not difficult, must be taken thoroughly. The seeds of most species are susceptible to fungal, so the substrate at about 90°C in the oven should be sterilized prior to sowing. The germination time is about 14 days up to 2 months, depending on kind, with a germination temperature of 18-25°C, whereby the substrate should be kept consistently moist (not wet). Good ventilation is essential, especially for species from the dry regions such as West Australia.
Species from the Alpine regions, such as Victoria, need a cold stratification for germination. These seeds should be mixed with damp vermiculite or sand in a closed container and prior to sowing stratify in the refrigerator for 1-2 months. The pre-germination of the seeds in a closed container is particularly suitable for the winter crops a method, when the temperatures outside are unsuitable. Usually the seeds germinate according to the stratification within 1-2 weeks. When the roots have reached 1-2 cm in length may be transplanted into individual small potty.
