halbimmergrüner bis laubabwerfender, bedornter Baum bis zu 20 m mit ausladender Krone und wechselständig angeordneten Blättern, die sich aus drei einzelnen, bis zu 12 cm langen und 9 cm breiten, verkehrt eiförmigen, rhombischen oder breit elliptischen Blättchen zusammensetzen. Die strahlend roten Blüten mit glockenförmigem Kelch erscheinen in dichten Trauben am Ende der Triebe am meist unbelaubten Holz
