immergrüner, vielverzweigter Strauch oder hoher Baum bis ca. 30 m (in Kultur bis zu 3 m) mit ausladender Krone, gegenständig angeordneten, bis zu 8 cm langen, breit lanzettlichen, glänzend, tiefgrünen Blättern mit rötlichem Neuaustrieb. Die weißen Blüten erscheinen in dichten Rispen, gefolgt von eßbaren, apfelförmigen, lila- bis purpurfarbenen Beerenfrüchten in hängenden Trauben
