laubabwerfender bedornter, zweihäusiger Strauch oder kleiner Baum bis ca. 7 m mit unterhalb der Dornen, kurzgestielten, gegenständig und auch wechselständig angeordneten, ledrigen, bis zu 9 cm langen elliptischen bis ovalen, oberseits, glänzend tiefgrünen, unterseits hell- bis dunkelgrünen Blättern mit attraktiver gelber Herbstfärbung. Die dichten, grünlich-weißen oder auch cremefarbenen Blütenköpfe erscheinen am Ende der Zweige, gefolgt von eßbaren, holzschaligen, dunkelgelben, bei Reife gelb-braunen Früchten mit süß-saurem Geschmack
