immergrüner, dichtbelaubter Strauch oder kleiner Baum bis ca. 7 m mit gegenständig angeordneten, ca. 10 cm langen und 4 cm breiten, ledrigen, länglich-ovalen, spitz zulaufenden, glänzend tiefgrünen Blättern und rötlichem Neuaustrieb. Die grünlich-gelben Blüten mit sternförmig angeordneten Petalen erscheinen in Dolden, aus denen sich birnenförmige, dunkelgrüne bis braunrote Beerenfrüchte entwickeln. Die aromatisch duftende, rötliche Rinde wird zur Gewürzgewinnung (Zimt) genutzt
