laubabwerfende oder immergrüne, meist zweihäusige Kletterpflanze bis zu 15 m mit verholzten Sprossachsen und wechselständig angeordneten, bis zu 5-gelappten, ca. 20 cm langen und 20 cm breiten, tiefgrünen, an der Basis herzförmigen Blättern. Die cremefarbenen bis hellgelben Blüten mit schwarzer Zeichnung im Zentrum erscheinen einzeln in den Blattachseln. Aus den Blüten entwickeln sich hängende, eßbare, grüne, bei Reife orangefarbene bis rote, ca. 20 cm lange, eiförmige Früchte mit kleinen Stacheln besetzt und orangefarbenem Fruchtfleisch. Die Früchte können ein Gewicht bis zu 1,5 kg schwer werden und enthalten 10x mehr Carotinoide als Karotten und 70x mehr Lycopin als Tomaten 
Verwendung: Sowohl Samen, Wurzeln und das Laub werden als Gemüse verzehrt und/oder medizinisch genutzt.
