laubabwerfender, verholzender, robuster Ranker bis ca. 10 m mit wechselständig angeordneten, bis zu 10 cm langen und 5 cm breiten, ovalen bis elliptischen, leicht zugespitzten, tiefgrünen Blättern mit leicht gesägten Blatträndern an rötlich gefärbten Blattstielen. Die duftenden, weißen bis cremefarbenen Blüten erscheinen in hängenden Rispen in den Blattachseln. Aus den weiblichen Blüten entwickeln sich eßbare, bei Reife rote oder auch rosafarbene, fleischige Früchte
