immergrüner, kleiner Baum von bis zu 10 m mit wechselständig angeordneten, bis zu 15 cm langen, ledrigen, länglich-ovalen bis elliptischen, glänzend tiefgrünen Blättern. Die zwittrigen, 3-zähligen gelben Blüten erscheinen einzeln oder paarig an Stamm (Kauliflorie) und Ästen (Ramiflorie), gefolgt von herzförmigen, birnen- oder nierenförmigen Früchten bis ca. 40 cm Länge mit dorniger, dunkelgrüner Schale. Das Fruchtfleisch ist weiß, faserig, weich und von wohlschmeckendem süß-saurem Geschmack
