langsamwüchsiger, zur Trockenzeit laubabwerfender Baum bis ca. 8 m (je nach Naturstandort bis zu 15 m) mit kurzem, korkigem Stamm, bedornten Zweigen und wechselständig angeordneten, unpaarig gefiederten Blättern, die sich aus gegenständig angeordneten, ungestielten, bis zu 4 ovalen bis elliptischen, bis zu 12 cm langen und 6 cm breiten, tiefgrünen Blättchen und einem gestielten, endständigen Blatt mit gesägten Blatträndern zusammensetzen. Der Neuaustrieb ist pink-maroonfarben. Die bis zu 2 cm großen, duftenden, grünlich-weißen Blüten mit 4 zurückgebogenen Petalen und zahlreichen gelblichen Staubblättern erscheinen einzeln oder in kleinen Büscheln entlang der jungen Zweige in den Blattachseln und am Ende der Triebe. Aus den Blüten entwickeln sich eßbare, bis zu 10 cm große, bei Reife grünlich-gelblichbraune, runde bis eiförmige Früchte
