immergrüner Strauch bis zu 5 m mit kletternden Zweigen und wechselständig angeordneten, ca. 20 cm langen und 10 cm breiten, ovalen, oberseits tiefgrünen, unterseits helleren Blättern mit auffälliger Nervatur. Die ziegelroten Blüten erscheinen einzeln oder bis zu 8 Blüten in kleinen Gruppen am Ende der Triebe, denen eßbare, ovale oder elliptische, leuchtend rote Früchte in Büscheln folgen
