immergrüne, mehrjährige, rhizombildende Staude bis zu 0,95 cm mit fächerförmig angeordneten, langgestielten, ledrigen, speerförmigen, glänzend grün-bläulichen Blättern, die im Laufe der Jahre ca. 3 cm dicke, binsenartige Stiele bilden. Die leuchtend orange-blauen Blüten entwickeln sich aus den Blattscheiden, die von einem etwas kleineren, kahnförmigen, grünen bis rötlich-violetten Hochblatt getragen werden
