immergrüner, buschiger Strauch mit gegen- und auch wechselständig angeordneten, an der Basis herzförmigen, spitz zulaufenden, mittelgrünen, intensiv nach Anis duftenden Blättern mit auffälliger Nervatur. Die kleinen, cremefarbenen Blüten erscheinen in langen Ähren in den Blattachseln.
Verwendung: Ein aus der Pflanze produziertes Öl funktioniert zur Abschreckung der Gelbfiebermücke, ebenso wird die Pflanze in der Volksmedizin bei Koliken und verschiedenen Erkrankungen, wie Grippe, Leber-, Wunden- und Bläschenerkrankungen eingesetzt.
