immergrüner, kleiner Baum bis zu 12 m mit ausladender, buschiger Krone, kurzem, knorrigen Stamm mit schwarzer Rinde und wechselständig angeordneten, bis zu 32 cm langen, ledrigen, länglich ovalen, glänzend tiefgrünen Blättern mit heller Mittelrippe. Der Neuaustrieb ist zunächst rosa, über beige zu dunkelgrün gefärbt. Die creme-weißen Blüten erscheinen in den Blattachseln, männliche in 3 bis 5-blütigen hängenden Trugdolden, weibliche Blüten einzeln, aus denen sich eßbare, rundliche, bis zu 7,5 cm ø große, bei Reife dunkelgelbe oder braunrote Früchten folgen.
Verwendung: Verschiedene Teile der Pflanze werden in der Volksmedizin als enzündungshemmend und Wundheilung eingesetzt.
