immergrüner, kleiner, dichtbelaubter Baum bis ca. 10 m mit wechselständig angeordneten, bis zu 7 cm langen und 2,5 cm breiten, ovalen, am Rand gewellten, tiefgrünen Blättern, die bei Zerreiben einen zitronenpfefferartigen Duft verströmen. Die kleinen, grünlich-weißen Blüten erscheinen in achsel- oder endständigen dichten Rispen, aus denen sich kleine pfefferkorngroße, bei Reife dunkel purpurfarbene Beerenfrüchte entwickeln
