p> laubabwerfender, ausladender, dichtbelaubter, hoher Baum bis ca. 30 m (in Kübelkultur bis ca. 3 m) mit gegenständig angeordneten, aromatischen bis zu 16 cm langen und 7 cm breiten, ledrigen, länglich-elliptisch, schmall-elliptisch bis lanzettlichen, oberseits glänzend tiefgrünen Blättern mit kastanienbraunem, lila schimmerndem Neuaustrieb. Die duftenden, kleinen weißen Blüten erscheinen in bis zu 8 cm langen Rispen, oftmals vor dem Neuaustrieb. Aus den Blüten entwickeln sich eßbare, rundliche, kleine, ca, 1,2 cm ø bei Reife tiefrot bis violett-schwarze Früchte mit herben Geschmack.
Verwendung: Junge und getrocknete (braune) Blätter werden in der Küche als Gewürz verwendet.
