laubabwerfender, aromatischer, zweihäusiger Strauch bis ca. 3 m (am Naturstandort bis zu 5 m), mit wechselständig angeodneten, ca. 15 cm langen und 12 cm breiten, breit ovalen bis fast runden, beidseitig behaarten, am Rand gezähnten, tiefgrünen Blättern. Die bis zu 38 cm langen, aufrechten oder auch überhängenden Blütenähren in weiß, pink- oder malven bis lilafarben erscheinen in dichten Rispen vorwiegend an den Zweigenden meist in der laublosen Zeit. Die männlichen und weiblichen Blüten unterscheiden sich in Form und Farbe
