immergrüne, mehrjährige, rhizombildende Staude bis zu 1,5 m mit fächerförmig angeordneten, langgestielten, ledrigen, speerförmigen, glänzend tiefgrünen Blättern. Die leuchtend orange-blauen Blüten entwickeln sich aus den Blattscheiden, die von einem etwas kleineren, kahnförmigen, grünen bis rötlich-violetten Hochblatt getragen werden
