großer, immergrüner oder auch laubabwerfender, pyramidenartig wachsender Baum bis ca. 30 m, der mit dem Alter einen flaschenförmigen, wasserspeichernden Stamm bildet, wechselständig angeordnete, langgestielte, ca. 20 cm lange, ahornförmige, ledrige, glänzend grüne Blätter, die sowohl eiförmig als auch ungelappt oder handförmig sein können. Die glänzend, scharlachroten, glockenförmigen, wachsartigen Blüten bis ca. 1,5 cm erscheinen in endständigen Rispen an meist laublosen Bäumen

Overwintering: Older specimens bright at approx. 5-10°C and water only sporadically in larger intervals and small quantities, The foliage is dropped at cooler temperatures and keep dry during the leafless time.
