The Grevillea or also called Silver Oak occur with approximately 360 species and numerous hybrids in Australia, some species of them are endemic to Indonesia, New Guinea and New Caledonia. These evergreen flowering plants with their alternate arranged leaves are so diverse in leaf-, flower shape and color, as it can be only the Grevillea.
The sowing of these species is somewhat lengthy and requires patience, because these species in the temperate zones are native and may germinate not in the heat of the summer. This can be an environmental factor with regard on survival of seedlings in natural surroundings. The best sowing time would thus the winter or early spring.
Thick-shelled seeds are just notched with a sharp knife or the shell is removed.
Thin-shelled seeds pour shortly with hot water (not boiling water) and let swell for about 24 hours before. The seeds germinate at a temperature of about 18-23°C within 14 days up to one year, depending the type and time of sowing.
