Hakea are endemic in Australia, where you will find the largest biodiversity in the dry regions south of West Australia. Hakea's are evergreen shrubs or small trees up to 6 m with spirally arranged up to 20 cm long, leathery leaves, simple or compound, linear or needle-like, flat or roundish, sometimes longitudinally grooved with toothed or entire margin. The flowers appear in the leaf axils, rarely at the end of the shoots and are dense flowerheads with variable, spherical or cylindrical shapes. From the flowers develop the more or less woody follicle.
The propagation by seeds is not difficult, but must be taken carefully. The seeds of most species are susceptible to fungal, so the substrate at about 90°C in the oven should be sterilized prior to sowing. The germination time is approx 14 days up to 2 months, depending on kind, with a germination temperature of 18-25°C, whereby the substrate should be kept consistently moist (not wet). Good ventilation is essential, especially for species from the dry regions such as West Australia.
Species from the Alpine regions, such as Victoria, need a cold stratification for germination. These seeds should be mixed with damp vermiculite or sand in a closed container and prior to sowing stratify in the refrigerator for 1-2 months. The pre-germination of the seeds in a closed container is particularly suitable for the winter crops a method, when the temperatures outside are unsuitable. Usually the seeds germinate according to the stratification within 1-2 weeks. When the roots have reached 1-2cm in length may be transplanted into individual small potty.
