immergrüner, hoher Strauch oder kleiner Baum bis zu 5, selten bis zu 10 m mit wechselständig angeordneten Blättern, bestehend aus 3-5 paarig angeordneten, bis zu 16 cm langen und 6,5 cm breiten, länglich ovalen oder oval-lanzettlichen, tiefgrünen Blättchen. Die bis zu 40 cm hohen, aufrechten Rispen bestehen aus röhrenförmigen, duftenden Blüten mit 3 violettfarbenen Petalen, herausragenden nach oben gebogenen, reinweißen Staubfäden, an der Basis rosa-rot gezeichneten Trag- und Hochblättern, die im Alter zu weiß verblassen und erscheinen am Ende der Triebe.
Verwendung: Blätter, Stengel und Wurzeln sind leicht giftig, werden aber medizinisch verwendet um Schmerzen bei Rheuma, Arthritis und Abschwellungen zu lindern.
Das Holz ist hart und schwer!
