laubabwerfender, hoher, mit Stacheln besetzter Baum bis zu 5 m, am Naturstandort bis zu 30 m, mit wechselständig angeordneten, ahornähnlichen, ca. 25 cm breiten, 5-7 breiten,gelappten, unregelmäßig tiefgelappten, oberseits glänzend tiefgrünen Blättern mit gesägten Blatträndern an bis zu 50 cm langen Blattstielen. Die ca. 2,5 cm großen, weißen bis gelblich-grünen Blüten erscheinen in Dolden an einem bis zu 30 cm breiten, verzweigten Blütenstand am Ende der Triebe. Aus den Blüten entwickeln sich dunkelblaue, fast schwarz aussehende Früchte
