immergrüner Strauch oder kleiner Baum bis ca. 4 m (in Kultur bis zu 2 m) mit wechselständig angeordneten, bis zu 9 cm langen, ovalen bis oval-elliptischen, oftmals in der Mitte gefalteten, herabhängenden, oberseits tiefgrünen, unterseits helleren Blättern. Die intensiv nach Jasmin duftenden, weißen Blüten und einem goldgelben Fleck an der Basis der zerknittert aussehenden Petalen erscheinen in den Blattachseln in kleinen Büscheln
